Having trouble deciding on a major? Undergraduate Major Mentors can help!
Each academic department has selected senior representatives to assist undeclared students having questions and concerns about particular fields of study. Either through one-on-one casual meetings or through e-mail conversations, you can discuss the following topics:
Questions to ask an Undergraduate Major Mentor
What the department is like:
- What courses would I take for my major?
- Is it possible to add a second major or minors?
- Tell me about the faculty in the department?
What special opportunities are available in the department:
- What departmental clubs and organizations exist?
- What kinds of special topics courses or trips are offered?
- Does the department offer special projects, such as teaching assistant, research assistant, mentor programs, research opportunities? What have students done as special projects in the past?
- What internship or practicum opportunities are available?
- Will I do a senior research project? What kinds of research opportunities are available?
- What connections do the faculty have in the community? regionally? nationally? internationally?
What happens when I graduate?
- What careers can I pursue with my major?
- Do majors from this department often go directly on to graduate school? What advanced degrees do they pursue?
