Campus Life > Leadership Development

At Nebraska Wesleyan University, leadership is defined as “"the ability to empower others to achieve shared goals that promote the common good."” Wesleyan believes that each student has leadership potential to be discovered, developed, and celebrated. Through study, practice, and experiences, students will be challenged and supported to acquire knowledge, develop skills, and clarify values in the pursuit of effective leadership. Nebraska Wesleyan University has numerous involvement opportunities, which are an integral part of the college experience. It is through these experiences that leadership activities are nurtured and developed. Nebraska Wesleyan is committed to providing a wide variety of leadership experiences. Here are some of the opportunities in which students are encouraged to take part:

  • more than 80 student organizations
  • intercollegiate athletics, including 18 sports
  • Greek organizations
  • Residence hall councils
  • Peer assistance programs
  • Cooperative learning in courses and co-curricular organizations
  • Internship programs
  • Teaching assistant opportunities
  • On-campus student employment
  • Leadership skill training and discussions
  • LEAD (Leadership Education and Development) Retreat presented each Spring semester
  • Thematic Leadership Conference
  • Full voting student representation on Board of Governors and President's Council
  • Student representation on more than 20 major campus committees, commissions and council

LEAD Retreat

LEAD Retreat is an intense 26-hour experiential leadership program based on the Social Change Model of Leadership. Each year, 30 students are chosen to participate in the retreat based on nominations by faculty, staff and other student leaders. The retreat is open to students of all ages.

Students that attend LEAD Retreat return to campus with new relationships with other students, a greater understanding of their own strengths, and a new understanding of leadership for positive change.

Leadership Conference

The Thematic Leadership Conference is held each spring semester with the intent to educate student leaders with the skills they need to successfully empower others. This conference brings together leaders from across the Nebraska Wesleyan University campus as well as student leaders from other universities.

The Leadership Conference provides participants with effective tools for leadership including motivation, team building, networking, and inclusion. Leaders also learn techniques that will enable them to identify leadership styles that exist within their organization and to recognize and embrace cultural and group dynamic diversity.

The conference includes a keynote speaker presentation and break-out sessions. Students leave the conference with knowledge that will help them achieve their goals and the goals of others.
