Market Yourself
Simply put, helping you find a job is our job.
While landing that job is your responsibility, we give you the tools to find openings and present yourself—and your NWU education—effectively.
Before you fill out your first application, your résumé, cover letter and interview skills all need to be sharp. The Career and Counseling Center can help on all three fronts.
Résumés
The best résumés are clear and to the point, but also distinctive. They cover your basics, but also show how you stand out from other candidates.
Optimal résumé is a free tool for NWU students to help you build—you guessed it—an optimal résumé.
Collegegrad.com gives great advice to people crafting their résumés.
Cover letters
Many new job seekers make the mistake of using the same cover letter over and over again. Cover letters must be customized for each employer. (And no, changing the address at the top doesn’t count.) Catering your message shows that you took the time and initiative to research a company. You don’t like getting form letters, and neither do they.
Not sure where to start? CareerLab.com offers hundreds of example letters.
Bring your résumé and cover letter into the Career and Counseling Center for a critique.
Interviews
Preparation is the key to successful interviewing. Practice talking about your strengths. Know the employer’s needs. Dress and behave like a professional.
Collegegrad.com/intv has excellent interviewing advice. But better than anything you’ll find online is person-to-person practice. Arrange a mock interview with a Career Counselor.
