About Computing at NWU
Your Computing Identity:
Your Nebraska Wesleyan login/password is your personal identification for the Nebraska Wesleyan network and computing services. It is the same as your login name on Email or Huxley (file server), and is used to form your Nebraska Wesleyan email address (e.g., jsmith@NebrWesleyan.edu).
A Nebraska Wesleyan login/password is needed to gain access to campus computers, computing labs, Nebraska Wesleyan email, Web publishing, some site-licensed software, administrative applications, and more.
Account administration, help questions and general service regarding the Nebraska Wesleyan login/password can be obtained in Smith-Curtis Hall Room 121.
If you are a new student, you will receive your account information when you register for your first semester of classes.
If you are a new transfer student, faculty or staff member, an account will be automatically created for you. Go to CS/IT (Smith-Curtis 121) to pick up your account. Photo ID is required for release of account information. Faculty and Staff password information can be sent through campus mail. Once you have received your account, you will still need to activate it.
Why is a
You must verify who you are to use many Nebraska Wesleyan network computing resources. This verification ensures the privacy of your personal information and restricts the use of services to authorized users.
To make access to such services more secure and consistent, Nebraska Wesleyan is consolidating the identifications you need to just one: the Nebraska Wesleyan login/password. With a Nebraska Wesleyan login/password, you now can log in to email or Huxley (file server), use a computer in a computer lab or general use area, or access your account via the Web from anywhere in the world.
What is Blackboard and how do I gain access to it?
Blackboard is Nebraska Wesleyan's product choice for delivery of online educational materials. Blackboard provides a convienient solution for providing course materials to students via the Internet. Through the use of Blackboard students are able to gain access to all posted information provided by the instructor. Blackboard has an easy to use and intuitive interface. Common examples of materials provided to students by their instructors via Blackboard include syllabi, reading materials and course assignments.
To gain access to the Blackboard system, use the same username and password as you would use to login to your email.
To obtain help with account administration, support questions and general service with Blackboard, please submit a ticket.
About Residence Hall Connections:
Residents of Nebraska Wesleyan residence halls may connect their personal computers to the Nebraska Wesleyan computer network. This means that if you own a personal computer, you may send and receive e-mail and access the resources available on the World Wide Web.
Instructions for Connecting to the Internet
Computing Services will make our best effort to provide a functional and stable network connection for the student. Unfortunately, there may be brands or models of computers or combinations of software that simply will not work with our network.
Macintosh
For Macintosh computers, an Ethernet 10/100-BaseT interface is required. All recent Macintosh computers have this interface pre-installed. If you have a Macintosh that meets the minimum configuration requirements specified in Guidelines for Computers in the Residence Halls, but does not have an ethernet port, please call CS/IT (x 2341) for assistance in purchasing an ethernet card.
PC
For PC-compatible computers, the network interface card should be a 3-Com EtherLink III 10-BaseT card or a 3-Com Fast EtherLink 10/100-BaseT card. Without the 3-Com label on the card we cannot garantee the card will function with our network. The exact model number of the 3-Com card depends on the type of computer you have.
Computers using a network card other than those specified above may not be able to connect to our network. The 3-Com cards will be available for purchase during New Student Orientation from CS/IT.
Support
Computing Services will support network operation up to the wall jack in your room. You are responsible for the cost of any maintenance, repairs, or enhancements to your computer. Students will receive an instruction sheet during New Student Orientation on how to configure their system to connect to the campus network. It is the students responsiblity to read and follow the instructions. Computing Services personnel cannot and should not be expected to make these configuration changes to student computers.
