Warriors Score Late to Defeat NWU, 4-1

October 7, 2009

Alexa Staehr and Kayla Smelker both scored two goals to lead Midland Lutheran College to a 4-1 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan University in Great Plains Athletic Conference women's soccer action on Wednesday night (Oct. 7) at Abel Stadium in Lincoln, Neb.

Leah Stevens scored a goal for NWU to start the second half and tie the match at 1-1, but the Warriors scored three goals in the final 25 minutes to pull away for the victory.

Midland Lutheran (8-3, 4-2 GPAC) took advantage of a stiff south wind in the first half as they controlled the ball for the majority of the first 45 minutes. The Prairie Wolves played solid defense, but Staehr finally scored in the 35th minute to make the score 1-0 at halftime.

NWU (4-6-2, 0-4-2 GPAC) scored their only goal of the match midway through the second half when Leah Stevens fired a shot from 20 yards out after a corner kick.

The Warriors scored again less than a minute later as Smelker scored the first of her two goals. Midland then scored two more goals in the final three minutes to get the score out of hand.

The Prairie Wolves return to action this Saturday (Oct. 10) when they travel to Mitchell, S.D., to face Dakota Wesleyan University.
