Casey Friesen scored the game winning goal with just over two minutes left to play in the second overtime to give Hastings College a 2-1 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan University in a Great Plains Athletic Conference women's soccer match on Wednesday night (Sept. 17) at Abel Stadium in Lincoln, Neb.
It was the second time in two GPAC matches that NWU has had to go to double overtime. The Prairie Wolves tied their opening conference match with Sioux Falls. NWU is now 0-5-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the GPAC. Hastings improves to 3-2-0 overall and 1-0 in GPAC.
Hastings controlled much of the first half and finally got on the board in the 36th minute when Jesse Herse scored on a pass from Megan Kennedy. The Broncos led 1-0 at halftime.
Just when it looked like the Prairie Wolves would be shutout, Allison Frohn found the goal in the 83rd minute to tie the score at 1-1 and send the game to overtime.
Neither team scored in the first overtime period, then Friesen scored the game-winner in double overtime.
NWU will be back in action on Sept. 23 when they host Dana College at 6 pm.
