It took until the final minute of the second overtime, but Nebraska Wesleyan was able to end its 2012 season on a winning note as Ashlee Slade scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to give the Prairie Wolves a 4-3 win over Briar Cliff University in GPAC women's soccer action Saturday (Oct. 27) at Abel Stadium.
Nebraska Wesleyan finished the 2012 season with a 5-10-3 overall record and a 4-4-2 mark in the GPAC to finish in a tie for sixth in the league standings.
After playing 19 minutes of extra time, the match looked destined to end in a tie. However, Makensie Thaller headed the ball forward to Slade who had a breakaway and she converted the goal.
Slade finished with two goals in the match as her goal right before halftime gave the Prairie Wolves a 3-2 lead at the break.
The match got off to a rough start for the Prairie Wolves as an own goal in the first 10 minutes gave BCU an early 1-0 lead. Less than four minutes later, NWU responded as Mia Keady scored off a goalie save to tie the match at 1-1.
Thaller added a goal in the 22nd minute to put the Prairie Wolvevs up 2-1. Briar Cliff came back four minutes later to tie the match again as Sadelle Schultz scored on a cross.
Schultz would score again in the 72nd minute of the second half for the lone goal of the second period making the score 3-3 at the end of regulation.
Nebraska Wesleyan had 19 shots in the match, eight more than Briar Cliff. Emily Dierks closed her fine career at NWU with six saves getting the win in goal in her last game.
