The Nebraska Wesleyan men's cross country team won the NCAA III Central Region Championships to earn a spot at the NCAA III Championships on Nov. 22 in Hanover, Indiana. The Prairie Wolves edged St. John's (Minn.) by nine points to win the 26-team field. Also, Jackie Spelts qualified individually for the NWU women by placing third overall.
The NWU men have now qualified for the NCAA III Championships for 12 straight seasons, which is the fifth longest streak in the nation. The Prairie Wolves were led by Andrew Laflin who finished in the top 10 by crossing the line in 7th place with a time of 25:45.5. Just behind Laflin was Logan Watley who placed 12th in a time of 25:54.6. Also placing in the top 30 was Brian Copley who placed 29th finishing at 26:32.7.
The Nebraska Wesleyan women placed seventh and did not qualify for the NCAA III Championships as a team. The Prairie Wolves finished with a score of 191, as Wartburg won the team title with a score of 92.
However, Jackie Spelts ran solid race to finish third with a time of 22:06.9. Spelts autotmatically qualifiers for nationals as the top seven individuals not on the qualifying teams advance on.
Other top placings for the NWU women were Bridget Baldwin (19th), Hayley Sutter (40th), Hannah Kinberg (64th) and Malania Huebert (65th).
