NWU Women End Estonia Trip With Overtime Win

The Nebraska Wesleyan women’s basketball team capped off their trip to Estonia with a 77-70 overtime victory over Tartu University on Friday (Aug. 24) in Tartu, Estonia. The Prairie Wolves finished the trip with a 1-2 record.

The Prairie Wolves trailed by as many as nine points early in the first half but battled back to retake the lead in the second half. NWU built up an eight point lead in the second half but couldn’t hold on as the game ended tied in regulation. In the overtime period senior forward Mallory Shanahan took over the game and led the Prairie Wolves to the seven-point win.

Shanahan was one of three players to reach double figures in scoring for the Prairie Wolves in the victory. The Wahoo, Neb., native posted a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. She had scored 19 points in the second game of the trip.

Freshman Alyssa Stanek had the other double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds. Stanek had 12 defensive rebounds and six offensive rebounds as she controlled the glass. Payton Everett was the other NWU player in double figures with 10 points, including two 3-point baskets. Carolina Alves added 15 rebounds in the win.

Nebraska Wesleyan will return from their 10-day trip to Estonia on Sunday as the 17 players will be back to start the Fall semester of classes on Monday.
