30-Point Victory Improves NWU to 2-0

Four different players scored in double figures as Nebraska Wesleyan improved to 2-0 on the early season with a 80-50 victory over Martin Luther College on the first day of the NWU Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament held Friday night (Nov. 19) at Snyder Arena in Lincoln. In the other game of the night, St. Catherine's University defeated Central College 87-56.

Nebraska Wesleyan (2-0) now will take on St. Catherine's on Saturday afternoon at 4 pm for the tournament championship.

NWU led by 14 points at halftime, 39-25, then came out and shot 53.3 percent in the second half to pull away for the big victory.

The Prairie Wolves have now scored at least 80 points in the first two games of the season, after reaching 80 points only once the entire 2009-10 season.

Katy Golden and Shea Rasmussen led the NWU attack as both scored 18 points. Golden recorded her first double-double of the year with 18 points and 10 rebounds going 7-11 from the field. Rasmussen was 8-10 at the free throw line and also added four steals.

Sadie Struebing chipped in 14 points, and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Mallory Shanahan added 12 points and a career-high five assists.

The Prairie Wolves controlled the glass as they outrebounded the Knights, 54-39. Besides Golden's 10 and Struebing's nine rebounds, Elizabeth Carlson came off the bench to pull down 10 rebounds.

Nebraska Wesleyan will now prepare for the tournament championship to face 1-0 St. Catherine's of Minnesota. The Wildcats cruised to an easy win over Central College, shooting 61.4 percent as a team.
