Volleyball Splits Four Matches at Simpson Invite

Nebraska Wesleyan finished 2-2 at the Simpson College Volleyball Invite on Sept. 14-15 in Indianola, Iowa. The Prairie Wolves went 1-1 on each day of the invite.

On Friday the Prairie Wolves opened the day with a 3-1 loss to Coe College. Coe won in scores of 25-22, 25-16, 20-25 and 25-23. Hannah Softley had a team-high 12 kills with five blocks, while Katelyn Walsh had 11 kills.

NWU then bounced back to make quick work of Grinnell College winning in straight sets, 25-17, 25-17, 25-15. NWU hit .356 as a team with Walsh leading the way with 15 kills. Alex Springman handed out 39 assists, while Mackenzie Hite had 14 digs.

On Saturday the Prairie Wolves played a competitive match with Saint Benedict but fell in four sets, 3-1, losing in scores of 25-23, 25-13, 20-25, 25-19. Walsh once again was the top scorer for NWU with 16 kills on 61 attempts. Hite recorded 31 total digs.

The most highly contested match of the weekend was the finale against the host school Simpson. Both teams went back and forth with NWU finally coming on top in the fifth set for the 3-2 victory in set scores of 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-11. Four different players had double digit kills led by Walsh with 15. Karny Kuehl had 12 while Cody Long and Softley each had 10. Springman handed out 52 assists with Hite tallying 20 digs.

Both Mackenzie Hite and Hannah Softley were named to the All-Tournament team for the second time this season.

The Prairie Wolves are 5-4 on the season and will finally open up home action this Tuesday (Sept. 18) when they host Concordia University in a GPAC match.
