The Nebraska Wesleyan University volleyball team capped off an excellent weekend with an upset of NCAA III No. 4 ranked Carthage College to finish 4-0 for the tournament and win the Simpson College Tournament Championship in Indianola, Iowa. The Prairie Wolves had four impressive victories in their final NCAA III regular season matches of the season.
On Friday, NWU opened up the tournament with a 3-0 victory over St. Mary's (Minn.). The victory redeemed a loss last week to St. Mary's at the Wartburg Tournament. The Prairie Wolves also defeated Northwestern (Minn.), 3-2, to cap off a successful first day.
Laura Brammeier and Kelsey Elman both had double-doubles in the win over St. Mary's. Brammeier had 10 kills and 12 digs, while Elman had 10 digs, 10 kills. Against Northwestern, Brittny Barber led the team with 19 kills. Erika Goldsmith recorded 42 digs.
To start off the day Saturday, NWU had 3-2 victory in a hard fought battle with the host school to send the Prairie Wolves to the tournament championship.
In the title game, the Prairie Wolves were matched with 4th-ranked Carthage. It marked the second time this season that NWU has faced a team ranked No. 4 in the DIII/AVCA Top 25. The Prairie Wolves lost a 3-2 decision to Wisconsin-Oshkosh earlier this season at the Elmhurst Tournament. This time, the Prairie Wolves showed the nation that they are ready to make a return trip to the NCAA III National Tournament with a convincing 3-1 victory. NWU took set one 25-22, then won 25-16 in set two. Carthage took set three 25-16, but NWU sealed the win with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set.
Erika Goldsmith and Elise Schmid were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
Nebraska Wesleyan improves to 11-3 overall on the season and 10-2 in NCAA Division III action. The Prairie Wolves will return to GPAC action on Wednesday when they travel to Seward, Neb., to take on Concordia University.
