Nebraska Wesleyan recorded its biggest conference volleyball victory of the season on Saturday night (Oct. 22) as the Prairie Wolves upset GPAC leader Morningside College, 3-1, on their home court in Sioux City, Iowa. NWU won in scores of 25-23, 21-25, 26-24, 25-23.
The Prairie Wolves improve to 14-9 overall and 6-5 in the GPAC. NWU currently sits in seventh place in the league standings, but they are just two games out of first place after the upset win.
It was a highly contested match as all four sets came down to the finish. Set one was tied at 23-23 but a Morningside service error and attack error gave NWU the first set victory.
Morningside broke out of a 16-16 tie in the second set and never trailed again as they got the 25-21 win in set two.
The tightest set came in set three as neither team ever led by more than three points. With the score tied 24-24, Nebraska Wesleyan got kills from Caitlin Anderson and Claire Bergen to get the victory.
NWU jumped out to a 21-13 lead in the fourth set then held off a late Mustang rally as Morningside climbed all the way back to within one at 24-23. Hannah Softley ended the match with a kill to give NWU the big upset win.
Karny Kuehl led NWU with 12 kills hitting .375 for the match, while Brittnie Kreikemeier added 11 kills. Caitlin Anderson dished out 40 assists and led the team with 20 digs to record her sixth straight double-double. Hannah Softley had nine kills and four blocks in the match.
Briana Schaeuble led Morningside with 13.
NWU will try to extend their winning streak this Wednesday (Oct. 26) when they travel to Hastings to take on Hastings College.
