2007 Season Wrap-up
Nebraska Wesleyan repeated as GPAC Champions
in men’s tennis going 7-0 in league play and appeared
ready to make the NAIA Tennis Championships again in 2007,
but the Prairie Wolves were upset 5-3 by the University of
Sioux Falls in the finals of the Region III Tournament and
finished the year 17-6 overall.
After facing some tough competition early in the season, the
men seemed to find their comfort zone at the Hilton Head (S.C.)
Tournament, winning four of five matches over spring break.
NWU went undefeated during the month of April and earned the
No. 1 seed for the regional meet, where the Prairie Wolves
quickly disposed of Dordt College, 5-2.
In the finals, however, Nebraska Wesleyan dug itself a hole
by losing all three doubles matches, including a 9-8 setback
at No. 3, where the team had only lost twice previously all
season. It proved too much to overcome, even for a team with
three seniors and its best record since going 19-6 in 2003.
In singles, Zac Kerr earned All-GPAC honors at the No. 1 spot,
while Nate Anderson (No. 3), Ryan McKeegan (No. 4), Eric Holmes
(No. 5) and Nick Eker (No. 6) were also recognized. The combos
of Kerr/Grant Johnson and Holmes/Anderson earned league accolades
at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, respectively, while the tandem
of Eker/McKeegan received honorable mention. Head Coach Rick
Harley repeated as GPAC Men’s Coach of the Year.
For their work in the classroom, Anderson, Johnson, Kerr,
Scott Ronshaugen and Eric Tesmer were each named Daktronics/NAIA
Scholar-Athletes. In addition, Anderson and Kerr also made
Academic All-District VII First Team.
