Concordia Eliminates NWU Softball

May 7, 2010

Eighth-seeded Concordia defeated the No. 2 seed Nebraska Wesleyan, 6-2, on day two of the 2010 GPAC Tournament in Hastings, Neb. The loss eliminated the Prairie Wolves from the tournament and ends their season.

Nebraska Wesleyan, which had one of their most successful seasons in school history, finishes with a 27-14 overall record. The 27 wins were the second highest win total in NWU softball history, and the 17 conference wins were the most for a NWU softball team.

Concordia jumped ahead 2-0 in the third inning and never trailed again as the Prairie Wolves could not come up with the key hit. NWU stranded nine runners on base, including five in the final three innings.

After the Bulldogs went up 2-0, NWU answered with a run in the bottom of the third. Dani Bryant singled and stole two bases. She then scored on a throwing error by the shortstop.

Bryant's two stolen bases gave her 45 for the season ( a NWU season record) and now 56 for her career which also breaks the career school record.

The Bulldogs added another run in the fifth and three more in the seventh to go ahead 6-1.

Jessica Weingarten hit a solo home run in the seventh, but that was all the Prairie Wolves could get as their season came to a close.

Alysia Wittmaack took the loss on the mound allowing 13 hits and six earned runs in seven innings. She finished the season with a 18-5 record.

Marcia Kennedy was the only NWU player with more than one hit in the game, and Weingarten's home run was the only extra base hit.
