Nebraska Wesleyan opened up their first ever GPAC Postseason Tournament with a 9-4 victory over Dana College on Thursday (May 6) in the opening round of the GPAC Tournament at the Smith Complex in Hastings, Neb. Hastings College rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat NWU, 9-6, in the second game of the day.
NWU will now face Concordia University in an elimination game on Friday (May 7) at Noon.
The Prairie Wolves jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and cruised to the win in game one. NWU took advantage of three Vikings first inning errors to score their runs.
Heather Stang was 2-3 with a double to lead the NWU offense. Alysia Wittmaack pitched the first four innings to get the win to get her 18th win of the year.
Game two also got off to a good start for the Prairie Wolves as they scored five runs in the second inning and one more in the fourth to go up 6-1. NWU appeared to be cruising with Wittmaack on the mound, but the Bronco bats erupted in the fifth.
Hastings had nine hits in the fifth inning with the big blow coming on a grand slam by Jen Weiler.
Nebraska Wesleyan was led in their big inning by a pinch hit two-run home run by Megan Tieken. Heather Stang had a solo home run in the fourth for her first home run of the career.
Wittmaack took the loss allowing 12 hits and nine earned runs to fall to 18-4.
NWU will try to keep their season alive on Friday on Day two of the tournament.
