Nebraska Wesleyan won the first three games of the tournament, but ran out of steam in the championship game as Washington University (Mo.) defeated the Prairie Wolves, 13-2, in six innings in the championship of the Grinnell College softball tournament this weekend (Apr. 6-7) in Grinnell, Iowa.
NWU had defeated Washington on Friday, 7-5, in a marathon 11 inning contest. The Prairie Wolves also defeated Grinnell, 12-2, in five innings on Friday.
On Saturday morning the Prairie Wolves rallied to score three runs in the seventh inning to defeat Westminster, 6-5, and send Nebraska Wesleyan to the championship game.
Against Westminster, NWU trailed 5-1 after four innings. NWU scored two runs in the fifth as Dani Bryant singled, stole two bases and scored on a triple by Kayla Randel. Randel then scored on a groundout by Becky Bomberger.
Down by two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Randel and Bomberger both singled. Lauren Bodfield tied the game with a two-run triple to bring up Anna Brownell. Brownell hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Bodfield.
Against Wash U in the championship, Bodfield hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to put NWU ahead 2-1. Washington then got hot at the plate as they pounded out 16 hits to cruise to the 13-2 victory.
Bodfield and Brenna Maguire were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
