Softball Splits With Briar Cliff in Home Opener

Brenna Maguire took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and earned the complete game victory as Nebraska Wesleyan defeated Briar Cliff University, 8-3, in game one of a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 31). BCU came back to win game two, 6-2.

It was the 2012 home opening doubleheader for the Prairie Wolves at University Place Park in Lincoln.

NWU (3-8, 2-2 GPAC) scored one run in the third inning then Kayla Randel had an RBI double in the fourth to put the Prairie Wolves up 2-0.

A big fifth inning put the Prairie Wolves up by five. Jessica Weingarten had a two-run double and Maguire added a double of her own.

BCU finally recorded a hit in the sixth and went on to score three runs and pull within two.

NWU came back with three more in the bottom of the inning as Megan Tieken had a two-run single.

Maguire improved to 2-5 on the year with the complete game win allowing three earned runs with two strikeouts. Becky Bomberger went 3-4 at the plate for NWU, while Weingarten and Jenna Beckner each had two hits.

The Chargers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings and they would never trail in the second game as the Chargers pounded out 12 hits.

Anna Brownell and Megan Throener had back-to-back doubles to plate a run for NWU in the third. The only other run came in the sixth as Lauren Bodfield tripled and scored on an error.
