Softball Opens GPAC With Split at Hastings

Nebraska Wesleyan and Hastings College split a pair of 4-3 games in the Great Plains Athletic Conference softball opener for the Prairie Wolves. NWU won the first game, 4-3, then the Broncos took game two, 4-3, in nine innings.

The Prairie Wolves (2-8, 1-1 GPAC) scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh to win the first game of the night in Hastings. With two outs, Megan Tieken walked then scored on the game-winning double by Becky Bomberger. It was the second double of the game for Bomberger who also hand an RBI double in the top of the fifth.

Bomberger got the NWU offense going in the first inning as she hit a solo home run to put the Prairie Wolves ahead 1-0. Hastings scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Bomberger finished 3-4 with two doubles, a HR and three RBI. Jenna Beckner was 2-2 at the plate.

In the second game, NWU jumped ahead 3-0 but couldn't hold on. Anna Brownell had an RBI single in the top of the second inning. Tieken had a two-run single in the top of the third to put the Prairie Wolves up 3-0.

Hastings tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning.

After neither team scored in the first extra inning, the Broncos earned the win on a single in the bottom of the ninth.

NWU will have their home opener this Saturday (Mar. 31) when the Prairie Wolves host Briar Cliff University.
