April 1, 2009

Alysia Wittmaack struck out 12 batters in a complete game 2-hit shutout victory to lead Nebraska Wesleyan University to a 1-0 win over Midland Lutheran College in game one of a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader on Wednesday (Apr. 1) at Fremont, Neb. The Warriors came back to beat NWU, 9-1, in five innings in game two.

Nebraska Wesleyan's victory in game one snapped the Prairie Wolves' five-game losing streak and improved their record back to over .500. The Prairie Wolves are now 10-10 overall and 4-4 in the GPAC.

Wittmaack was in a pitchers dual with Sladek from Midland Lutheran in game one. After allowing two singles in the bottom of the second, Wittmaack did not allow another hit the rest of the game. She retired 17 of the last 18 batters with only one player reaching base on an error in the fifth inning.

Wittmaack improves to 8-5 on the season after recording her third shutout of the season. She now has seven career shutouts which ranks second on the NWU career charts. Her 98 strikeouts this season is the seventh highest single season total.

NWU got their only run in the top of the fifth inning. Jenna Turner led off the inning with a single, Megan Beckstead was hit by a pitch and Jamie Jaques singled to load the bases. Ashley Stang then walked to bring in Turner with the only run of the game.

Turner was the only NWU player with more than one hit as she was 2-4. Marcia Kennedy and Alysia Wittmaack both doubled for the Prairie Wolves.

In the nightcap, the Warriors exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning and rolled to a 9-1 victory in a game that was called due to the run rule.

Brenna Maguire allowed seven runs and seven hits in 2.1 innings to take the loss for NWU.

The Prairie Wolves scored one run in the top of the fifth inning when Kennedy got a pinch hit RBI double. Steph Schuelke also doubled for NWU, for the Prairie Wolves only other hit of the game.

NWU is scheduled to travel to Yankton, S.D., to take on Mount Marty College this Saturday (Apr. 4).
