Softball Ends Season With Two Wins

The Nebraska Wesleyan University softball team ended the 2009 season with a pair of victories over University of Sioux Falls on Saturday (Apr. 25) in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Prairie Wolves swept the Cougars with scores of 5-0 and 3-1. The doubleheader scheduled for Sunday at Briar Cliff was rained out and will not be made up.

NWU finished the season with a 20-16 overall record and a 12-10 mark in the GPAC.

Alysia Wittmaack threw a complete game four-hit shutout in the first game for NWU. Wittmaack struck out 12 and walked none to pick up her fourth shutout of the season and improve her record to 13-8.

The Prairie Wolves broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the fifth inning. Jenna Turner led off with a triple and was driven in by Kelsey Worley. Marcia Kennedy had an RBI double, and Ashley Stang had an RBI single.

Kennedy added an RBI single in the seventh and Wittmaack drove in Kennedy for the final run of the game.

In game two, NWU fell behind 1-0 after Sioux Falls scored a run in the bottom of the third inning. The Prairie Wolves took advantage of two USF errors to tie the game in the fourth inning.

Kelsey Worley and Baillee Holt each had RBI doubles in the sixth to give NWU the lead and the victory.

Brenna Maguire got the win pitching 5 1/3 innings allowing no earned runs and only one hit while striking out six. Wittmaack came in to get her third save of the season as she struck out four in the final 1 2/3 innings.
