2007 Season Wrap-up
Nebraska Wesleyan produced its second best
softball season in school history, finishing 24-12 in 2007
and breaking several records along the way, including team
marks for earned run average (2.20) and fielding percentage
(.965).
After a 3-4 start to the year, the team won seven straight,
which included sweeps against Mt. Marty College, Doane College
and Dordt College. The Prairie Wolves crushed three Doane
pitchers for 19 runs on 21 hits to hand the Tigers mercy-rule
losses in the first two games on their new field. In the Dordt
sweep, Lance Kingery earned his 100th career head coaching
victory at NWU.
Nebraska Wesleyan lost four of its next six games, but found
the winning groove again with six consecutive wins in late
April. During the span, NWU snapped an eight-game losing streak
to Concordia University (Neb.), which dated back to April
17, 2002.
Splits against Hastings College, eventual GPAC Champion Morningside
College and Dana College pushed the team’s final league
record to 13-9. First-year pitcher Ashley Wagner tossed a
no-hitter against Morningside, NWU’s first no-no in
softball history.
The Prairie Wolves then traveled to Dubuque, Iowa, where they
defeated host Clarke College 3-1 in the championship game
of the AD3I Midwest Tournament. A total of five NWU players
were named to the All-Tournament team.
When NCAA bids were handed out, Nebraska Wesleyan did not
find itself among the teams selected, but with only one senior
on the team, NWU should be in position to break its postseason
drought in 2008.
Sophomore Kelsey Worley, who hit .433 on the season, earned
a place on the All-GPAC First Team, while Wagner, senior Vicki
Ortmeier and juniors Klancy Nixon and Mollie Seim made the
Second Team.
Sophomore Andrea Thorne received honorable mention.
Ortmeier, Worley and Wagner were among AD3I’s First
Team selections, while Nixon was a third team pick. Wagner,
who earned AD3I Rookie of the Year accolades, also earned
AD3I Student-Athlete of the Month recognition for March and
broke the school records for career shutouts (8) and single-season
ERA (1.10) and strikeouts (105).
