Finishing with a record of 11-6-1, head coach James Beckmann, in his seventh year at the helm, and the 2007 Nebraska Wesleyan men’s soccer team posted its best record since the 2003 season, where NWU finished with a 11-8 record. The men started the season strong, winning five of their first six games, with three of those wins coming in overtime periods. In a double overtime win over Northwestern, sophomore Cole McCallum scored the game winning goal which led to his earning of the Association of Division III Independents Men’s Soccer Player of the Week Award and the GPAC Offensive Player of the Week Award. As the season progressed, the Prairie Wolves continued to roll over opposition. During a four game GPAC winning streak, sophomore Goal Keeper Josh Miller only allowed two goals during the stretch. NWU struggled at the end of the season, recording one win out of their last four games. However, their GPAC record of 7-4-1 earned them second in the regular season standings, an improvement for the preseason standing of fifth.
Statistically the squad was led by sophomore forward Cole McCallum and senior Mitch Memming with nine and seven goals, respectively. McCallum also contributed four assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Josh Miller had 84 saves and only allowed 25 goals in 18 games. Miller was also named the GPAC defensive player of the year. Memming, Miller and sophomore defender Jess Pieper all earned First-team GPAC honors. Memming also earned honors as a member of the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® First Team. |
