Six Prairie Wolves Earn All-GPAC in Softball

LINCOLN, Neb. —Six members of the Nebraska Wesleyan University softball team were named to the 2008 Great Plains Athletic Conference Softball All-Conference team that was announced Tuesday (May 6). NWU senior shortstop Klancy Nixon and senior catcher Mollie Seim were both selected on the All-GPAC First Team. Senior Ashley Tiedgen was named to the All-GPAC Second Team as an utility player, while Kelsey Worley, Megan Beckstead and Marcia Kennedy received honorable mention All-GPAC.
Nixon (SS, Sr.) led the team with a .385 batting average with a team-high 47 hits. The Norfolk, Neb., native also led the team in triples (5), home runs (4), RBIs (28) and stolen bases (16). Nixon earned All-GPAC Second-Team honors as a junior in 2007. After three seasons, she will leave NWU as one of the most decorated players in school history. Her name appears on 13 NWU season and career all-time top 10 lists. She started every game at shortstop for NWU during the past three seasons.
Seim (C, Sr.) was second on the team this season with a .345 batting average. The Grand Island, Neb., native earned All-GPAC Second-Team honors in 2007 and 2005. For her career she played in 112 games and had 83 hits. She ranks fifth all-time at NWU in career triples and putouts
Tiedgen (UT, Sr.) was the Prairie Wolves top pitcher posting a 14-6 record with a school record 125 strikeouts. She also led the team in at-bats and was second on the team with 35 hits, nine doubles and four triples. She earned honorable mention All-GPAC in 2006. The Lincoln, Neb., native leaves NWU as one of the all-time greats. Tiedgen set NWU career records in five categories and is second in two categories. She now holds softball records for games played (147), innings pitched (391), appearances (76), pitching wins (37) and strikeouts (269). She ranks second in at-bats (468) and ERA (2.33).
Worley (1B, Jr.) hit .324 with 24 hits on the season. She started 24 games before missing the last part of the season due to sickness. The Lincoln, Neb., native is currently third on the NWU career charts with a batting average of .377.
Beckstead (OF, Fr.) batted .304 in her first season in a Prairie Wolves uniform. The Bellevue, Neb., native had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in the outfield. She was third on the team with 34 hits.
Kennedy (C, Fr.) had a .324 batting average as a freshman this season. The Omaha, Neb., native had eight doubles, two home runs and finished with 17 RBIs. She also led the team by drawing 15 walks.
Kendra Klein from Morningside College was the GPAC Player-of-the-Year, Kelly Baumert from Morningside and Lexy Determan from Northwestern were the Pitchers-of-the-Year and Heather Hupke from Briar Cliff University was selected as the GPAC Coach-of-the-Year.
Nebraska Wesleyan finished the 2008 season with a 22-16 overall record. The Prairie Wolves finished 12-12 in the GPAC to place ninth in the league.
