Baseball Goes 1-3 For the Weekend
Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team fell back into a tie for sixth place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings after going 1-3 over the weekend in GPAC action. NWU started the weekend off right defeating GPAC leader Northwestern College, 8-5, but then dropped three in a row. Northwestern took game two on Saturday, 5-1, then Midland Lutheran College swept the Prairie Wolves on Sunday afternoon in Fremont, winning game one, 8-3, and game two, 2-1.
Nebraska Wesleyan is now 18-16 overall and 10-10 in the GPAC. The Prairie Wolves are tied with Dakota Wesleyan for sixth place with the 10-10 record heading into the final week of conference action. NWU is just two games out of third place, but also two games out of 10th. The top eight teams qualify for the GPAC Postseason baseball tournament which is May 1-3 in Sioux Falls.
Highlights from over the weekend included Zane Cascini picking up the victory in game on over Northwestern. Cascini improves to 5-0 overall and leads the team with a 4.70 ERA. NWU pounded out 12 hits in the opening game, including five doubles. John Rust hit his sixth home run of the season and added a double. Andy McGowan, Jon Scholz, Corey Petersen and Jared Meays all had two hits in the game.
NWU had just three hits in game two and also committed four errors in the 5-1 loss. Tom Hranac took the loss on the mound allowing three earned runs and eight hits in six innings of work.
Against Midland Lutheran, the Warriors scored four runs in the fourth inning to pull away for the 8-3 win in game one. McGowan led the NWU offense with two hits and an RBI. Owen Schmidt took the loss giving up six earned runs in four innings of work.
Chris Wahl was the hard luck loser in game two against Midland Lutheran. Wahl gave up just four hits and two earned runs in the 2-1 loss. The Prairie Wolves managed just three hits in the game.
NWU has a nonconference game on Tuesday (April 22) against Doane College in Crete, then gets set for the final weekend of GPAC play. NWU will host Dana College on Friday then take on Doane in Crete to end the regular season on Saturday.
