NWU Rallies to Sweep Dordt in Baseball

Lincoln, Neb. – John Rust hit a towering 3-run home run over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the fifth inning to put Nebraska Wesleyan ahead for the first time and they held on to win game two, 4-3, in a GPAC baseball doubleheader against Dordt College on Monday afternoon (April 14) at NWU Field in Lincoln. NWU rallied from three runs down to earn a 6-5 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.

The Prairie Wolves (17-13, 9-7 GPAC) trailed 2-0 after the first inning of game two, and could not get on the board until the fifth inning. Andy Nealon led off the inning with a double and Jon Scholz walked to set up the blast for Rust. With two strikes, Rust slammed the ball over the 400 sign in center field to put NWU ahead 3-2. NWU then added another run in the sixth as Matt Coatman and Jared Meays had back-to-back singles before Nealon drove them in with an infield out.

Dordt (8-17, 5-19) added a run in the seventh after a lead-off triple, but NWU starter Chris Wahl closed out the complete game victory. After giving up two runs in the first, Wahl (3-2) retired 14 of the next 15 batters.

Game one started out with Dordt grabbing a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. NWU answered with two runs in the bottom of the second on a 2-run home run by Corey Petersen. The Defenders then added two more runs in the top of the third.

NWU chipped away at the lead scoring one run in the fourth and fifth innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Meays had a single and Andy McGowan drove him in to tie the game at 5-5. Jon Scholz then reached on a throwing error which allowed the winning run to score.

Owen Schmidt got the win on the mound for NWU pitching 6.0 innings allowing five earned runs on 12 hits. Cory Scott came in to retire the last two batters to pick up his first save of the season.

Steve Schaffer was 3-3 at the plate, while McGowan and Meays each had two hits.
