Praire Wolves Sweep Cougars in Softball

Lincoln, Neb. – Klancy Nixon drove in Ashley Tiedgen with the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Nebraska Wesleyan to a 6-5 victory over the University of Sioux Falls in the first game of a GPAC softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 13) at University Place Park in Lincoln, Neb. NWU then rolled past USF, 8-0, in five innings in the second game.

Tiedgen also became Nebraska Wesleyan's all-time winningest pitcher as she picked up the win on the mound in game one. Tiedgen won her 32nd career game to pass Paige Losey for 1st on the NWU all-time pitching charts.

NWU (16-10, 6-6 GPAC) took advantage of a USF error in the 9th inning as Tiedgen reached on an error by the pitcher then moved to second on a wild pitch. Nixon then singled home Tiedgen with the game-winning run.

USF (2-10, 1-9 GPAC) led 5-2 after the top of the fourth inning, but NWU rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Nixon drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Marcia Kennedy had an RBI double.

In game two, NWU took advantage of five Sioux Falls' errors and rolled to the 8-0 victory in a game that was called due to the run rule. NWU pitcher Alysia Wittmaack threw a complete game one-hit shutout on the mound.

NWU pounded out 10 hits as three different players had two hits apiece. Tiedgen was 2-3 with two RBI, Erin Starkey was 2-2 with an RBI and Andrea Thorne was 2-3 with two runs scored.

The Prairie Wolves return to action on Wednesday (Apr. 16) when they host Mount Marty College in a doubleheader that was moved from April 12. First pitch is set for 5 pm.
