NWU Defeats Doane in Nonconference Game

Lincoln, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan took advantage of four straight hit batters in the bottom of the seventh inning to score four runs and rally back to earn a 6-4 victory over Doane College in a 9-inning nonconference game on Wednesday (April 9) at NWU Field in Lincoln, Neb.

Freshman pitcher Mitch Hain came in to pick up his first win of the season pitching 3.0 scoreless innings of work in relief in his first varsity collegiate appearance.

The Prairie Wolves (14-12) trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning after giving up two runs in the first and two more in the seventh. However, Doane pitchers loaded the bases by hitting three NWU batters, then Jared Meays was hit to drive in Andy McGowan. Corey Petersen followed with a two-run single down the right field line, then Brandon Rohr executed a perfect squeeze bunt to drive in Meays.

Hain then shut down the Tiger bats allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out one. Cory Scott started for NWU going 4.0 innings allowing three hits and two runs, but no earned runs. He struck out three.

Petersen drove had three RBIs to lead the NWU offense, while John Rust continued his hot streak by going 2-2 with an RBI.

NWU is now set for a big GPAC weekend at home this weekend. The Prairie Wolves, currently in a four-way tie for fourth, are set to host Dordt College in a doubleheader on a Saturday (April 12) then Morningside College on Sunday (April 13).
