Prairie Wolves Take Two From Peru State

Peru, Neb. – The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team ended its three game losing streak by sweeping a doubleheader against Peru State College on Tuesday (Apr. 1) in Peru, Neb. NWU held off the Bobcats, 6-5, in game one then rolled to a 12-1 victory in the nightcap. The Prairie Wolves improve to 10-11 overall.
NWU got on the board first as Steve Schaffer had an RBI single in the first inning to give NWU an early 1-0 lead. The Prairie Wolves added another run in the top of the fourth to go up 2-0, but Peru State rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead after four innings.
The Prairie Wolves took advantage of a pair of Bobcat errors in the top of the sixth as NWU scored four runs on just two hits. NWU took a 6-3 lead, but Peru State added one run in the sixth and one more in the seventh but rally fell short. NWU closer Cory Hilgenkamp came in the seventh inning and Mark Houck hit a long fly ball with the wind to right field, but Jeremy Peters made a catch against the wall to prevent the game-tying run.
Cory Scott picked up with win on the mound after coming in for relief in the fourth inning of starter Ryan Linder. Scott went 2 1/3 innings allowing two runs on two hits. Hilgenkamp got his third save of the year. Schaffer, Corey Petersen and Matt Coatman each had two hits for NWU.
In game two, NWU pounded out 12 hits and scored five runs in two separate innings to earn the easy victory. Freshman starting pitcher Chris Wahl got the complete game victory allowing just three hits in seven innings of work. He struck out four, walked no one and allowed just one earned run.
Schaffer led the NWU offense going 3-4 with a double and two RBIs. Petersen had three RBI and Brandon Rohr picked up two hits.
The Prairie Wolves return to action this weekend for a pair of important GPAC series. NWU travels to Seward, Neb., on Saturday (Apr. 5) to take on Concordia University in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. NWU then is right back in action on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 6) when they host Hastings College in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. The Prairie Wolves need to pick up victories to remain eligible for the GPAC Postseason Tournament.
