Offense Explodes for NWU Softball

LINCOLN, Neb. —Nebraska Wesleyan pounded out 26 total hits and scored 18 runs as the the Prairie Wolves swept past Cornell College in the 2008 home opener on Saturday (Mar. 22) at University Place Park in Lincoln, Neb. NWU won by scores of 12-6 in game 1 and 6-4 in game 2.
NWU (5-1) jumped out to a four run lead in game one of the doubleheader after three innings. However, Cornell bounced back to score five runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead. NWU tied the game at 5-5 with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Prairie Wolves then exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to put away Cornell. NWU had eight hits in the fifth inning to seal the win.
Ashley Tiedgen led the way with three hits, including two doubles. Megan Beckstead also was 3-4 for the Prairie Wolves. Kelsey Worley, Jamie Jaques, Klancy Nixon, Marcia Kennedy and Mollie Seim all had two hits. Worley led the way with three RBIs, while Kennedy had a home run.
NWU fell behind 3-0 in the first inning of game two. The Prairie Wolves scored one run in the bottom of the fourth, but Cornell added another run in the top of the fifth.
It was another big inning that propelled NWU ahead in game two. The Prairie Wolves had five hits and took advantage of two errors as they scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Tiedgen was 1-2 with two RBI, while Nixon had two hits. Alysia Wittmaack got the win on the mound allowing four earned runs and seven hits in the complete game victory.
Nebraska Wesleyan opens it conference portion of the schedule on Tuesday (Mar. 25) when they travel to Sioux City, Iowa to take on Morningside College in a GPAC doubleheader at 5 pm. |
