Softball Opens Season With Three Wins

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team opened its 2008 season by going 3-1 at the University of Dallas Tournament on March 15-16 in Irving, Texas.  NWU rolled on day one with a 9-1 victory over Westminster College (Mo.) and an 11-0 victory over the University of Dallas.  On day two, the Prairie Wolves blanked Westminster 8-0 but dropped the final game, 6-5, to Dallas.

Freshman Alysia Wittmaack was a dominant force on the mound for NWU.  Wittmaack allowed just one earned run and five hits in 13 2/3 innings.  She also struck out 19 and walked just one batter forcing the opponents to a .109 batting average.

The Prairie Wolves hitters also made a big statement on the opening weekend.  NWU hit .373 as a team in the four opening games, pounding out 41 hits and 31 runs in only four games.

Klancy Nixon led the way with seven hits, including a double and a triple.  Mollie Seim, Kelsey Worley and Erin Starkey each had five hits.  Ashley Tiedgen added a home run and three singles.

In the Prairie Wolves loss to Dallas, NWU scored one run in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5.  However, a two-out single and double by Dallas in the bottom of the seventh gave Dallas the one run win.

Nebraska Wesleyan now returns home for the season home opener this Saturday (Mar. 22) when they are scheduled to host Cornell College at 1 p.m.
