Dunker, Elsasser Win NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Lincoln, Neb. – A pair of Nebraska Wesleyan University male student-athletes were among the 29 men in the nation selected to receive a $7,500 postgraduate scholarship from the NCAA for the Fall 2007 sports season.

Cross country athlete Chris Dunker (Sr., Beatrice, Neb., Beatrice High School) has a 3.50 cumulative GPA, majoring in English.  Dunker is a two-time NCAA III All-American in Cross Country.  He was a four-time All-GPAC selection and was named the GPAC Men’s Cross Country Runner-of-the-Year in 2007.  As a junior, Dunker was the Central Region and AD3I Runner-of-the-Year.  He has also been a 10-time All-GPAC performer in track & field for the Prairie Wolves.

Linebacker Kyle Elsasser (Sr., Bancroft, Neb., Bancroft-Rosalie High School) has a 3.92 cumulative GPA, majoring in Physics.  Elsasser is a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America ® selection.  As a senior he was named to the All-GPAC First-Team football team after earning All-GPAC honorable mention as a junior.   He has led the team in tackles the past two seasons.  Elsasser also was a two-time NAIA/Daktronics Scholar Athlete and also was named to the Omaha World Herald All-Nebraska NAIA Football Team.

Nebraska Wesleyan currently ranks in a tie for fifth in Division III for the number of its student athletes who have won NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.  NWU is tied with Johns Hopkins University with 33, trailing Massachusetts Institute of Technology by one. View NWU winners

NWU was the only Division III school with more than one scholarship winner.  The other schools with multiple winners were Division I Stanford (4), North Carolina State (3) and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (3).

The NCAA awarded 58 postgraduate scholarships of $7,500 each to 29 men and 29 women who participated in fall sports.  To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must meet minimum GPA requirements and have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which he or she was nominated.  The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics.  The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.
