2006 Season Wrap-up

Nebraska Wesleyan ended its football season with a 7-3 record, the team’s best mark since 2000, when the Prairie Wolves claimed a share of the GPAC title and advanced to the NAIA playoffs.

NWU finished the year No. 23 in the final NAIA Football Rating. The team overcame several key injuries in winning four of its last five contests. The only loss in that span was to eventual GPAC and NAIA national champion, the University of Sioux Falls. To view the NAIA final ratings, click here.

The Prairie Wolves placed fourth in the GPAC, behind three teams, which all advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA playoffs.
NWU ranked ninth in the NAIA for total defense (217.7 yards per game). Sophomore defensive back Phil Schroer, who earned GPAC Defensive Player of the Week honors three times in 2006, led the league and was also first in the entire NAIA with nine interceptions.
As far as awards, the Prairie Wolves garnered several. Senior offensive lineman Josh Codr was named to the All-Conference First Team, while junior defensive lineman Brandon Minch and senior defensive back Josh Strehle were both named to the All-GPAC Second Team. James Dorcey, Kyle Elsasser, Justin Florian, Steve Fox, Josh Hiatt, Zac Rabe, Schroer, Tim Thies and Connor Wobig each received honorable mentions. In addition, senior John Klinker became the eighth recipient of the Chad Frisbie Award, the only award given by the NWU football team.

Academically, Elsasser was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® First Team as selected by CoSIDA. The linebacker led the team in tackles and owns a 3.92 GPA in physics.
