2006 Season Wrap-up

Nebraska Wesleyan repeated as conference regular season champions in women’s soccer, going 13-3-2 overall (10-1-1 GPAC). It was the team’s seventh league crown since 1996.

After a tough start to the season against several top NCAA Division III teams, NWU hit mid-season stride with three conference wins and closed out the year with seven consecutive victories. The women also extended their home unbeaten streak to 26 games. The Prairie Wolves are 23-0-3 in Abel Stadium dating back to Oct. 11, 2003. Macalester College (25-0-3 since Sept. 17, 2004) is the only Division III women’s soccer team with a longer active home unbeaten streak.
NWU played six overtime matches on the year, including wins over Hastings College and Sioux Falls late in the season, but early OT losses to the College of St. Benedict and Concordia College (Minn.), a team that won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, likely cost the Prairie Wolves their first trip to the NCAA Div. III Women’s Soccer Championships.

Individually, junior Brooke Woodward led the league in game-winning goals (6) and sophomore goalkeeper Vicki Koke led the conference in shutouts (10). Senior forward Stephanie Anderson led the team in goals scored and finished her career ranked ninth all-time at NWU with 32 goals. As a group, the senior class did not break many individual records, but NWU as a team finished 50-18-5 (.719) during their four years.

Senior Lindsay Priefert and sophomore Monica Hilger joined Anderson and Woodward on the All-GPAC Second Team. Meanwhile, junior Liz Baltzell, sophomore Wendy Soenksen and senior Molly Shields each earned honorable mentions.
