2006 Season Wrap-up
Despite playing with no seniors, the 2006 NWU softball
team sprinted to a 14-4 start. During that stretch, several school
records were already being threatened with more than half the season
remaining.
Sophomore hurler Ashley Tiedgen won nine of her
first 10 pitching decisions and earned Player and Pitcher of the
Week honors from the AD3I and the GPAC, respectively.
Sophomore Erin Starkey, who also garnered AD3I honors,
and junior Vicki Ortmeier were the biggest sparks offensively for
the Prairie Wolves. With her sixth home run of the year, Starkey
broke Michelle Forsberg’s school record of five round trippers
in 1995.
The team earned a No. 8 ranking in the Midwest Region,
but after a late-season swoon, NWU was denied an invitation to the
NCAA Div. III Championships. The Prairie Wolves finished with an
overall record of 20-18 and a mark of 10-14 in the GPAC. It was
the team’s second 20-win season in the last three years under
fifth-year head coach Lance Kingery.
Following the season, Ortmeier, Starkey and Kelsey
Worley all earned AD3I and GPAC Second Team honors, while Tiedgen
received Honorable Mention recognition from both organizations.
