2006 Season Wrap-up
After tying the school record for wins in a season
a year ago, the baseball team welcomed new coach Bill Fagler in
2006.
Fagler’s son, Joe, who played for NWU from
1997-2001, served as an assistant and was joined on the coaching
staff by fellow alum Charlie Colón and Mark Honnor, who both
returned for a second stint with the team.
After getting off to a slow 2-10 start, the team
picked up speed during the middle of the season, winning six of
nine games in one stretch. In the midst of the run, senior Troy
Kantor was named Pitcher and Player of the Week from the Association
of Division III Independents (AD3I) and the Great Plains Athletic
Conference (GPAC), respectively.
Thanks to sweeps against Hastings College, Dordt
College and Morningside College and late season victories over Dana
College and Doane College, the Prairie Wolves went 12-9 in league
play and earned their highest conference finish since the 2001 team
won the inaugural GPAC title.
As the No. 5 seed at the league tourney, NWU suffered
a pair of one-run losses and made an early exit, finishing the season
14-22 overall.
Kantor earned All-GPAC First Team recognition, while
sophomores Jared Meays and Tom Hranac were named to the Second Team.
Junior Shawn Votava and senior Josh Replogle both received Honorable
Mention. In addition, senior Sam McKelvey was selected as a Daktronics/NAIA
All-America Scholar-Athlete.
