NEBRASKA WESLEYAN WINS FIRST-EVER NATIONAL
TEAM TITLE
At last. Nebraska Wesleyan University finally has
an entire team that can call itself NCAA National Champions.
The Prairie Wolves won their first team title in
school history Thursday at the final round of the 2006 NCAA Division
III Men’s Golf Championships hosted by NWU and Firethorn Golf
Club.
All five Nebraska Wesleyan players finished among
the top 20 individually. Senior Jon Deines and junior Aaron Stockton
tied for fifth at +14 (298), while seniors Travis Davis and Jeff
Holm joined sophomore Tyler Lawson in a tie for 16th place at +19
(303).
Consistency was the difference as no one on the
team shot lower than 70 during any of the tournament’s four
days, but no one shot higher than 80, even on Thursday when winds
added to the challenge of an already difficult course.
NWU shot 303 to stretch its final margin of victory
to 10 strokes over the University of Redlands, which finished second
as a team for the third year in a row. Meanwhile, Methodist College
took third, Oglethorpe University placed fourth and defending champion
Guilford College, which won its first NCAA men’s golf title
at Firethorn in 2002, faded to fifth place.
Stephen Goodridge from the University of Rochester
won the individual title at +5 for the tournament (289), just two
strokes ahead of John Jennison from Rhodes College and three strokes
ahead of Nick Obie from Redlands. Oglethorpe's Danny Swanick placed
fourth at +12 (296).
