Both the Nebraska Wesleyan University men's and women's track teams performed well at the 2010 Great Plains Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships held Saturday (May 1) at Hastings, Neb. The NWU men placed second, while the women took home third place in the team race.

Nebraska Wesleyan scored 133 team points in the men's field to finish second behind Doane College which scored 192.50. The NWU women had 116 for third trailing Doane and Concordia University which tied for the team title with 158 points.

For the Prairie Wolves men, they had three individual winners on the day.

Senior Logan Watley won the 1,500 meter run in a time of 3:57.67 to edge Concordia's Dana Schmidt by .29 seconds. Junior Kevin Janata continued his strong season in the hurdles by winning the 110 hurdles in a time of 14.56. Janata currently has the fastest time in NCAA III in the hurdles. He also placed sixth in the 400 hurdles.

Freshman John Kersenbrock made an impressive debut in his first GPAC Outdoor Championships. Kersenbrock won the long jump with a mark of 23-11. He also placed in four other events to earn five All-GPAC honors. Kersenbrock was third in the 4x400, fifth in the 4x100 and sixth in both the 200 meters and triple jump.

The Nebraska Wesleyan women won five individual events and had a double winner. Senior Jackie Spelts won both the 1,500 meters and the 5,000 meters. Her time of 17:32.37 was a new GPAC meet record. In the 1,500 she had a time of 4:39.96 to defeat teammate Katie Nelson (4:43.78) who placed second in the event.

Freshman Taylor Tacha just missed being a double winner as she won the 100 hurdles (14.68) and was just edged out of first to place second in the 400 hurdles (1:03.68).

Another record breaking performance was put up by Amanda Brichacek. Brichacek set a new GPAC record in the hammer throw with a toss of 176-00 to win that event.

The final individual winner for the Prairie Wolves was senior Anne Kersenbrock in the long jump. Kersenbrock had a leap of 18-2.50 to win that event. She also placed in three other events to win four All-GPAC honors. Kersenbrock was second in the 4x100, seventh in the 100 meters and eighth in the 200 meters. She finishes her career with 30 All-GPAC honors.
