Three members of the Nebraska Wesleyan men's track and field team have been named to the Academic All-District VII First Team in the College Division and will now be considered for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors, which will be announced on June 25. In addition, two women from NWU made the Academic All-District VII Second Team for track and field/cross country.
FIRST TEAM honorees:
Gordon Coffin (Sr., Osceola, Neb., Osceola High School) recently graduated with a 3.95 GPA in communication studies. He also earned a minor in English. Coffin already made ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team in 2006 and Third Team in 2005. For his NWU career, he was a four-time All-American, five-time Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) champion and 18-time All-GPAC performer in the sprints.
Jed Droge (Sr., Pawnee City, Neb., Pawnee City High School) had a double-major in athletic training and exercise science to go with his 3.78 GPA. He also made ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team in 2006. A prolific long jumper, Droge overcame several injuries to earn All-America honors six times (at both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Div. III Championships in each of the last three years). He won three GPAC long jump titles and never finished lower than second at the conference meet.
Evan Knight (Jr., Keystone, Neb., Ogallala High School) has a 3.99 GPA and a double-major in history and Spanish. Knight earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team in 2006 and is already a six-time All-American, two-time GPAC champion and five-time GPAC runner-up. He also holds three school records.
SECOND TEAM honorees:
Holly Andrews (Jr., Seward, Neb., Seward High School) majors in exercise science with a minor in Spanish and has a 3.99 GPA. Andrews is already a 12-time career All-GPAC performer, five-time NCAA qualifier and three-time GPAC Champion. In 2007, she won the 100 hurdles at the conference outdoor meet and qualified for the NCAA Div. III Championships, where she earned All-America honors.
Brittany Hubbard (Sr., Gering, Neb., Gering High School) has a 3.75 GPA in exercise science. Hubbard repeated as GPAC Champion in cross country last fall and won three conference track titles this spring (indoor 5K, outdoor 5K and 10K). She also has a pair of Top 10 finishes at the NCAA Central Region Cross Country Championships to her credit.
