Both the Nebraska Wesleyan University men's and women's track teams placed second in the team race at the Darren Young Classic Indoor Track & Field meet at Grinnell College on Saturday (Feb. 11).
NWU men won six individual events and junior John Kersenbrock was named the men's Field Athlete of the Meet. Kersenbrock won the long jump with a leap of 23-6 1/4. He was the only multiple event winner for the Prairie Wolves as he also won the 400 meters in a time of 49.87.
Other field event winners for NWU were Tommie Bardsley in the high jump (6-8) and Jay Wall in the pole vault (15-5). On the track, senior Jordan Rector won the Mile in a time of 4:26.49. Parker Schoen won the 3,000 in a time of 8:39.07 to edge out teammates Johnny Rutford and Mike Rathje who placed third and fourth, respectively.
As a team the Prairie Wolves scored 112 team points, finishing second to McMurry University with 120 points.
Three women won individual events for the Prairie Wolves. In the field events, Katie Schoen continued her successful senior year by winning the high jump in a career-best 5-7 1/4. Kayla Franzluebers was the winner in the women's weight throw with a toss of 49-3 1/2 which is the third best mark at NWU.
The lone winner on the track was senior Hannah Kinberg in the 5,000 meters. Kinberg ran a time of 17:44.49 to edge out teammate Malaina Huebert for the win. Huebert was second in a time of 17:46.71.
Next up for the Prairie Wolves track & field teams is the 2012 GPAC Indoor Championships on Saturday (Feb. 18) at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln.
