Track & Field Wins Five Events at NWU Invite

The Nebraska Wesleyan women brought home four first place medals at the NWU Invite held Saturday night (Jan. 24) at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. NWU competed against athletes from Nebraska, Air Force, Kansas State and Northwest Missouri State.

Junior Jackie Spelts (Burwell, Neb.) won her race for the second straight week. This week Spelts won the 1 Mile run in a time of 5:05.51. Her time is a new career best, and the third fastest time in school history.

Hayley Sutter (Lincoln, Neb.) won the 3,000 meter run by over 14 seconds in a time of 10:47.20. Anne Kersenbrock (O'Neill, Neb.) was first in the women's 200 meter dash in a time of 26.27. The other individual winner for the Prairie Wolves was Jenna Davies (Columbus, Neb.) who won the women's high jump with a height of 5-1.25. Mikaela Richard (Lincoln, Neb.) also jumped 5-1.25 to take home second place in the event.

For the NWU men, the only event winner was the 4x400 meter relay team. The team consisting of Derrick McKenzie, Josh Wall, Brandon Schlautman and Andy Coppersmith ran a time of 3:28.08 to win that event.

Other highlights for the NWU men were Logan Watley (Lincoln, Neb.) placing third in the 1 Mile Run (4:25.51), Kevin Janata (Howells, Neb.) taking second in the triple jump (44-2.00) and the group of NWU sprinters that placed well.

In the 200 meter dash, Derek Carson and Andy Coppersmith placed third and fourth, respectively, while Dan Bittner and Matt Glasnapp finished 4-5 in the 60 meter dash.

The next competition for the NWU Indoor Track & Field teams will be on Jan. 31, when the Prairie Wolves travel to Crete, Neb., for the Nisely Invitiational.
