Both men’s and women’s track teams at Nebraska Wesleyan University are gearing up for the GPAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, February 21.  The meet will be taking place at the Bob Devany Sports Center.  Field events start at 11 a.m. while the running events start at 12 p.m.

Leading the men into the Conference meet is defending GPAC One-Mile Champion Logan Watley.  He currently has the best entry time for the mile (4:16.86) heading into the Championships.  The men’s team will also rely on the efforts of two senior sprinters to help bring home the title.  Matt Glasnapp and Dan Bittner will be competing in both the 60 and 200 meter races on Saturday.  Derek Carson and Andy Coppersmith are among the favorites in the 200 and 400 meter dash.

Leading the women into the GPAC meet is All-American Jackie Spelts.  After finishing fifth overall at the NCAA Championships in Cross Country, she currently holds the top times in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meter races entering Saturday’s competition.  Her 5,000-meter time (17:19.57) is currently ranked third in the nation in NCAA Division III.  The women will also be looking towards junior Anne Kersenbrock for some major points.  At the 2008 Indoor GPAC Championships, Kersenbrock placed in four events (60, 200, 4x400 and the Long Jump) to help lead the lady Prairie Wolves.

Both teams will try to avenge their second place finishes from last year.  Both teams finished second to rival Doane College.  The men have won the Indoor GPAC championships 21 times (last in 2006), while the women have won the title 12 times in school history (last in 2004).
