Nebraska Wesleyan University will have eight athletes competing at the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships that will take place March 13-14 at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terra Haute, Ind. Six men and two women have qualified for the track & field championships for the Prairie Wolves.
Senior Derek Carson (Lincoln, Neb.) leads the NWU men into the championships, as the only athlete to qualify in two events. Carson qualified in the 400 with the fifth fastest time at 49.05. He is also part of the men’s 4x400 relay team that qualified.
Carson will be joined by three teammates in the 4x400 relay. Other NWU athletes on the 4x400 relay are junior Andy Coppersmith (Wallace, Neb.), senior Matt Glasnapp (Beaver Lake, Neb.) and freshman Myke Pettiford (Lincoln, Neb.).
Other individuals that have qualified for NWU are Kevin Janata in the 55 meter hurdles and Ryan Petersen in the pole vault. Janata (Howells, Neb.) has the 13th best time at 7.67 in the hurdles and is a first time qualifier. Petersen (Omaha, Neb.) enters the pole vault competition with the 13th best mark at 15-9 ¾.
Two Nebraska Wesleyan women qualified for the NCAA III National Meet. Junior Anne Kersenbrock (O’Neil, Neb.) qualified for the long jump competition where she will enter the meet with the eighth best jump at 18-3 ¾ . This is her first time qualifying for the Indoor Championships.
Junior Jackie Spelts (Burwell, Neb.) is the other NWU athlete to qualify for the National Meet. Spelts will run in the 5,000 meter run and comes into the race with the ninth best time. She also will be competing in her first NCAA Indoor Championships after earning All-America honors in Cross Country this season.
