Track Teams Perform Well in Opening Meets

The Nebraska Wesleyan track & field had athletes in two different places over the weekend (Jan 14 & 15). Both the men’s and women’s teams competed at the 2011 Holiday Inn Invitational at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln and the Ward Haylett Invitational at Doane College.

On the track at the Devaney Sports Center junior Malaina Hubert placed third in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:28.88. Hubert achieved a career high and a better position on the All-Time Indoor charts beating her previous record and moving from seventh to sixth place.

Junior Katie Schoen took the unseeded division of the high jump at the Holiday Inn Invitational for NWU posting a new career best of 5-5. This moves Schoen into the All-Time Indoor charts at number seven.

NWU had more athletes place in the Ward Haylett Invitational (Jan. 15) in Crete, NE. NWU was successful in many men’s and women’s events including a first place finish for sophomore Jack Chatelain.

Long jumper Jack Chatelain was the only NWU athlete to take first in any event at the Ward Haylett Invitational. Chatelain took first place jumping 23-02.5 in the men’s long jump and posting a new career best. Chatelain also placed second on the track in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.95.

Junior Audrey Jacobsen tied for second in the long jump with a distance of 16-11.5. Sophomore Deanna Dirkschneider took second in the shot put throwing 42-05.25. Falling a little short of that, senior Amanda Brichacek placed seventh with a distance of 41-05.25. Although placing seventh in the shot put for this meet Brichacek posted a new career best and moved into the All-Time charts ranking seventh. Brichacek also competed and took third place in the weight throw with a distance of 52-03.25.

Nebraska Wesleyan will compete at home this coming Friday (Jan. 21) in the NWU Invitational at the Bob Devaney Sports Center/Knight Field House.
