September 9, 2012

Nebraska Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead and went on to earn their first victory of the 2012 season with a 3-1 win over Macalester College on Saturday (Sept. 8) on day two of the Luther College Tournament in Decorah, Iowa.

The Prairie Wolves opened the Luther Tournament with a 1-1 tie against the host school on Friday afternoon.

Colby Twist wasted little time in the Macalester match as he scored during the sixth minute to put NWU ahead 1-0 for his second goal of the season.

NWU would add another first half goal as Kyle Jisa scored at the 38:00 minute mark to give NWU a 2-0 halftime lead. They would extend the lead to 3-0 ten minutes into the second half as Stephen Boakye scored his first goal of the year.

Macalester did get on the board in the 61st minute but it would not be enough.

NWU finished with 15 total shots, while Macalester had 14 shots. Turner Mead got the win in goal for NWU in his first start of the season. Mead recorded seven saves.

In the tie against Luther on Friday, Alex Thorson scored in the 27th minute to put NWU up 1-0. It looked like the Prairie Wolves would get their first win, but Luther scored off a corner kick at the 83:49 mark.

Neither team would score in overtime as the game ended in a draw.
