Men Get First GPAC Victory With 3-0 Shutout Over Chargers

October 3, 2009

Cole McCallum scored two goals to lead the Nebraska Wesleyan University men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Briar Cliff University in Great Plains Athletic Conference men's soccer action on Saturday night (Oct. 3) at Abel Stadium in Lincoln, Neb.

The victory was the first GPAC win of the season for Nebraska Wesleyan as they improve to 4-3-4 overall and 1-2-2 in the GPAC. It was just the second conference loss for Briar Cliff as they fall to 3-2 in the GPAC, 6-3 overall.

McCallum got NWU on the board early as he scored on a beautiful header from a throw in to put the Prairie Wolves up 1-0 at halftime. He added a second goal during the 50th minute off a rebound to give NWU a 2-0 lead.

The final goal of the night for the Prairie Wolves was scored by John Rutford at the 81:42 mark in the second half.

Goalkeeper Josh Miller posted a shutout as he recorded two saves and faced 14 total shots.

It was a special night for the NWU men's soccer team as they wore throwback uniforms to honor the 1999 NWU team. The 1999 team, which was honored at halftime, was the only undefeated team in school history as they went 19-0 and won the NIAC Conference.
