Early Goal Lifts NWU to 2-0 Victory

September 19, 2010

Colby Twist scored a goal just 1:43 into the match and that would be all Nebraska Wesleyan would need as the Prairie Wolves defeated Morningside College, 2-0, in men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 19) at Abel Stadium in Lincoln, Neb.

It was the Great Plains Athletic Conference opener for Nebraska Wesleyan as they improve to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in GPAC play, while Morningside falls to 1-4, 1-1 GPAC.

Both Nebraska Wesleyan goals were scored in the first 10 minutes of the match as Grant Johannes scored the second NWU goal at the 9:01 mark to give NWU the 2-0 advantage.

From there, the Prairie Wolves were able to keep the Mustangs out of the goal. Morningside had four shots on goal, but Zach Mergens got saves on all the shots. Mergens took over for Scott Sutherland who received a red card in the final minute of the first half.

NWU will try to carry this momentum into Wednesday's home match against GPAC rival Hastings College.
