Nebraska Wesleyan University senior guard Jake Spurgeon has been selected as the Association of Division III Independents (AD31) men’s basketball Player-of-the-Week for the week of Feb. 8-14.

Spurgeon (Gretna, Neb.) averaged 15.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists for the week as the Prairie Wolves went 1-1.  On the week he shot 53.8 percent from the 3-point line.

The Gretna H.S., graduate had his best performance of the week in NWU’s 73-59 victory against Midland Lutheran on Feb. 9.  Against the Warriors, Spurgeon scored a season-high 19 points and led the team with nine rebounds.  The left-handed sharpshooter was 5-7 from 3-point range.  His five made 3-pointers were the most for a NWU player this season and is the second time in his career that he made five 3-point baskets.

On the season Spurgeon is averaging 8.3 points and 4.1 rebounds.  He leads the team with 31 made 3-point baskets.  Spurgeon also leads NWU with 81 assists to rank sixth in the GPAC in that category.  He is fourth in the GPAC in assist/turnover ratio at 1.78.

Spurgeon will play his final two games in a Prairie Wolves uniform this week as NWU closes out the 2009-10 season.  NWU travels to Seward, Neb., to take on rival Concordia University on Wednesday (Feb. 17) then returns home for the season finale on Saturday (Feb. 20) when they host Morningside College.  Spurgeon and fellow senior Ryan Thramer will be honored before the Morningside game.

Nebraska Wesleyan had their four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with a loss at Dordt.  The Prairie Wolves are currently 10-13 overall and 8-8 in the GPAC.  They are assured of no worse than an eighth place finish in the conference, which would be the highest finish since 2004-05.
