Spurgeon Shoots NWU To 4th Straight Victory

Jake Spurgeon scored a season-high 19 points hitting five 3-pointers to lead Nebraska Wesleyan to a 73-59 victory over Midland Lutheran College in GPAC men's basketball action on Tuesday night (Feb. 9) in Fremont, Neb.

The win was the fourth straight GPAC victory for the NWU men, marking the first time since the 2000-01 season that the Prairie Wolves have won four straight GPAC games. It is just the second time since the GPAC formed that the NWU men won four GPAC games in a row.

NWU improves to 10-12 overall and 8-7 in the conference to get above .500 in the conference. The eight GPAC wins are the most conference wins for NWU since the 2004-05 season. Midland Lutheran falls to 4-23 overall and 2-13 in GPAC.

Nebraska Wesleyan led the majority of the game, but Midland did take a 17-16 lead with 11:16 to play in the first half. However, NWU would then go on a 16-0 run to take a 32-17 lead as the Prairie Wolves held the Warriors scoreless for nine minutes. After scoring at the 11:17 mark, the Warriors did not score again until 2:18 left when Zach Rosenboom made a pair of free throws.

Spurgeon was on fire from beyond the arc as the senior hit 5-7 from 3-point range en route to his 19 points. He also led NWU with nine rebounds, dished out four assists and had three steals.

It was another balanced day for NWU as four players reached double figures. Besides Spurgeon, Ryan Thramer added 12 points, Jim Lance had 11 and Bryce Arp scored 10.

The Prairie Wolves outrebounded Midland by 15 (41-26) and shot over 50 percent for the fourth straight game shooting 51.0% from the floor.

For Midland, Zach Rosenboom led the team with 16 points, while Jason Ahrens added 15.

NWU will look to continue their winning streak this Saturday when they travel to Sioux Center, Iowa to battle Dordt College at 4 p.m.
