Hastings College started the second half on a 27-4 run to break open a tied game at halftime as the Broncos beat the Prairie Wolves for the second time this season with a 72-55 victory in men's basketball GPAC action on Wednesday night (Jan. 20) at Lynn Farrell Arena in Hastings, Neb.
It was a tale of two halves for the Prairie Wolves who fall to 6-10 overall and 4-5 in GPAC play. NWU led for all but three minutes in the first half, extending the lead to as big as eight points at 27-18 with six minutes left in the half. A big dagger to the Prairie Wolves was a 3-pointer by Jeremiah Slough with 0:05 seconds left before halftime to tie the game at 32-32 heading into the locker room.
Hastings couldn't miss to start the second half as they made their first five shots and went 12-15 (80.0) during their big run to start the second half.
Meanwhile, NWU really struggled during that stretch with six turnovers and shooting 2-10 from the field. The Broncos finished the second half shooting 58.1 percent from the floor, while NWU was just 8-24 (33.3).
Jim Lance scored 12 points to lead NWU in scoring. Nick Dinan added 10 points and seven rebounds. Jake Spurgeon scored six points, tied for team lead with seven boards and dished out a game-high four assists.
Freshman Jake Marvin led Hastings with 18 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots. Waid Vontz scored 12 and Jeremiah Slough added 11.
Nebraska Wesleyan will return home on Saturday to face nationally-ranked Dakota Wesleyan University at 4 p.m.
